Crowdfunding

Acorn is the perfect climate-adapted superfood, but is very labor intensive to produce by hand. That makes it expensive. There is machinery available that can dramatically reduce the labor required – and the price we have to charge – but banks by and large don’t believe that acorns are food, and are unwilling to finance those machines. We need your help to raise that money so we can expand production, reduce costs, and bring acorn flour to the mainstream.

Your support is critical to making sure we can create living wage jobs with dignity and bring high quality sustainable native food to your kitchen table. We can’t do it without you!

What’s the big deal with Acorn anyway?

Acorn is one of nature’s perfect super foods and has been eaten all over the world for hundreds of thousands of years – your body is actually evolved to eat acorn. It has better nutritional density than most grains, a full set of amino acids to help your body build muscle, and proven benefits for the human digestive system.

Acorn is also the ultimate climate adapted crop and grows in poor soils without irrigation, improving the soil over time. It is resistant to drought, disease, floods, and even fire. As climate change drives crop failures in conventional crops like corn and rice, acorn provides an alternative that can reliably feed people at scale. But that can’t happen if acorn is so expensive no one can afford it. By investing in machinery, we can make acorn affordable to everyone and create real food security in a changing climate.

California has an $8B tree nut industry. Our state produces more almonds than anywhere else in the world – and uses 17% of our water to do it. If this crowdfunding campaign is successful, we will save more than 50 million gallons of water in 2024 alone compared to producing the same amount of food from almond. By 2031 we will save more than a trillion gallons a year. As climate change makes California and the western US hotter and drier, that’s a big deal.

But none of that can happen without YOU and your support, right now.

But Why a mailing list?

Crowdfunding sites use algorithms to decide which campaigns to boost and show organically, and which ones to sink. To get the organic exposure we need, we need to earn at least 10% of our goal in the first 48 hours after the campaign goes live – which means we need our friends and supporters to go and make that initial purchase as soon as the campaign goes live.

We will never spam you or sell your information, but email is just plain the best way to make an announcement like this.

How does this help?

We have very low startup costs and have spent the last year squeezing every penny to get those numbers as low as possible. If we can raise $100,000 it would get us off the ground.

One of the biggest hurdles to starting this business is that bankers don’t believe people actually want to eat acorn. Presales ahead of our launch prove the demand for delicious native foods and can help unlock loans, investment, and more – in addition to the money we raise directly.

If we can raise more, we have to borrow less – which means less money spent on loan payments and lower prices.

So what do I get?

We’re not asking for donations! Instead, we’re preselling our first few months of production – at discounts of 15-25%. You get a great deal on nutritious foods and we get the money we need to buy equipment and make acorn affordable to everyone for the first time.

What else can I do?

The simplest thing is to follow us on your social media platforms of choice and share our posts with your friends. The more people support our crowdfunding campaign the better our chances of success. That’s good news for anyone who wants to be able to eat native foods, and for everyone else too.
